Assessment Methods
The EPA for the Children, Young People and Families Practitioner Level 4 apprenticeship is made up of two assessment components, both of which must be passed to achieve the apprenticeship.
Observation of Practice
The purpose of the observation within practice is to assess the competency of the apprentice within their work environment against the KSBs for this standard. During the observation, the apprentice will work with or on behalf of a child or young person as an individual in their own right and as a central part of a family/carer entity. The observation will last for 80-90 minutes.
Competence Interview Informed by Submission of Portfolio
The Competence Interview is designed to confirm that the apprentice understands and can clearly explain the work included in their portfolio, although the portfolio itself is not directly assessed. Lasting 55–60 minutes, the interview focuses on the apprentice’s professional practice and the work referenced in the portfolio, exploring how they have applied the required knowledge, skills, and behaviours in their role. It aims to validate the quality of the work presented, address any gaps or perceived weaknesses in skills or knowledge, and explore the reasoning behind how and why the work was carried out.
EPA Results
NQual will communicate results within 10 working days of the final assessment.
If an apprentice Fails one or more component, they will be offered the opportunity to re-sit / re-take the component(s). It is then up to the apprentice’s employer how many attempts an apprentice is given.
Where any assessment method must be re-sat or re-taken, the apprentice will be awarded a maximum EPA grade of a Pass. Re-sits and re-takes are not offered to an apprentice wishing to move from a Pass to a higher grade.
