Assessment Methods
The EPA for the Learning & Skills Teacher Level 5 apprenticeship is made up of two assessment components, all of which must be passed to achieve the apprenticeship.
Observation : Lesson Observation and Professional Dialogue
This assessment component lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes and consists of a 60-minute lesson observation followed by a 45-minute professional dialogue. The apprentice will deliver a live lesson to a minimum of five learners before discussing their teaching practice with an Independent End-Point Assessor. This can be remote or online. Follow-up questions may be used to gather further evidence, and a 10% tolerance may be applied to allow completion of final responses. Apprentices must provide their lesson plan and supporting materials at the start of the lesson observation.
Professional Discussion Underpinned by a Portfolio of Evidence
The Professional Discussion is a two-way discussion between the apprentice and the independent assessor. It lasts 90 minutes and includes a minimum of 12 questions, with follow-up questions used to clarify responses and gather further evidence. A 10% tolerance may be applied to allow the apprentice to complete their final response. Apprentices may refer to their Portfolio of Evidence throughout the discussion; however, the portfolio is not directly assessed and is used to support their responses. The portfolio must include Two pieces of evidence should be records of observations of the apprentice teaching, with the accompanying lesson plan, and support materials for the observed lesson.
Results
NQual will communicate results within 10 working days of the final assessment.
If an apprentice Fails one or more component, they will be offered the opportunity to re-sit / re-take the component(s). It is then up to the apprentice’s employer how many attempts an apprentice is given.
Where an assessment method is re-sat or re-taken, the maximum overall EPA grade that can be awarded is Pass. Re-sits and re-takes are not available to apprentices wishing to improve a Pass grade.
