Specialist Teaching Assistant Level 5

Version 1.1  |  ST1414

EPA Overview

End-Point Assessment (EPA) is the final stage of the apprenticeship and provides an opportunity for apprentices to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and behaviours they have developed during their Specialist Teaching Assistant Level 5 apprenticeship.

The assessment for a Specialist Teaching Assistant Level 5 apprentice includes an Observation with Questions and a Professional Discussion Underpinned by a Portfolio of Evidence.

An apprentice cannot achieve their apprenticeship without passing the End-Point Assessment.

The Observation with Questions component of End-Point Assessment for Specialist Teaching Assistant Level 5 can only be carried out face-to-face.

Gateway Requirements

Gateway requirements for Specialist Teaching Assistant Level 5 apprentices include:

  • Evidence of achieving relevant maths and English qualifications if required by funding regulations or the employer

  • A completed Portfolio of Evidence

  • Confirmation that the apprentice is ready for EPA and has spent a minimum of 12 months on programme

  • Declaration of the chosen optional theme

Assessment Methods

The EPA for the Specialist Teaching Assistant Level 5 apprenticeship is made up of two assessment components, both of which must be passed to achieve the apprenticeship.

Observation with Questions

The apprentice will be observed in their workplace by an independent assessor. There must be no simulation in the observation. The observation will take 2 hours, inclusive of a 90-minute observation and 30 minutes for questioning following the observation. The assessor will ask at least 6 questions.

A session plan should be presented to the Independent  Assessor at the start of the Observation with Questions  Component. The activities in the session should allow the  apprentice the opportunity to demonstrate the KSBs for this  component.

Professional Discussion Underpinned by a Portfolio of Evidence

The Professional Discussion will last 60 minutes and will be a structured discussion between the apprentice and the independent assessor, to establish the apprentice’s understanding and application of the knowledge, skills and behaviours. The apprentice can refer to the portfolio to illustrate their answers, but the portfolio is not directly assessed. The assessor will ask a minimum of 10 questions.

Results

NQual will communicate results within 10 working days of the final assessment.

If an apprentice Fails one or more component, they will be offered the opportunity to re-sit / re-take the component(s).

Where any assessment method must be re-sat or re-taken, the apprentice will be awarded a maximum EPA grade of Pass. Re-sits and re-takes are not offered to an apprentice wishing to move from Pass to a higher grade.
