Overview
The NQual Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare is an Ofqual‑regulated qualification for training providers to deliver, required for people working (or newly appointed) in children’s homes and other residential childcare settings in England. It is designed for residential childcare workers, key workers, and similar roles who support children and young people day-to-day, and must be achieved (for newly appointed individuals) within two years of employment in line with sector expectations.
This qualification develops knowledge and occupational competence to provide safe, nurturing, trauma-informed, and outcomes-focused care. Learners build capability in areas such as safeguarding, communication, risk management, assessment and planning, group living, attachments and positive relationships, health and well-being, rights, equality and diversity, professional development and effective team working.
Learners must be working, volunteering, or on practical placement in real residential childcare settings to generate competence evidence.
The duration of this programme is commonly 12-18 months depending on experience, delivery model and ability.
This qualification is awarded by NQual, an Ofqual‑regulated Awarding Organisation, and is available to approved centres.

There are no further entry requirements, however, learners should have or be working towards a minimum of level 2 in literacy and numeracy or equivalent.
