Quality assurance ensures that assessment outcomes are valid, reliable, and supported by sufficient evidence, maintaining the integrity of learner achievement. What does quality assurance involve, and how do awarding organisations such as NQual maintain these standards?
In this blog, we break down the key criteria for quality assurance, explaining how processes such as centre approval, External Quality Assurance (EQA) visits, and sampling help protect the integrity of qualifications.
What is Quality Assurance at NQual?

At NQual, quality assurance protects the integrity and underpins all qualification delivery and assessment activities. Our approach is designed to maintain high standards, consistency, and public confidence in all our qualifications and assessments.
As an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation, we follow strict regulatory requirements to ensure that every assessment outcome is fair, accurate, and reliable.
Our quality assurance processes apply across regulated qualifications, apprenticeship assessments, and endorsed programmes. This ensures a consistent approach to both UK and international centres.
Assessment Quality: NQual’s 5 Essential Criteria
At the heart of quality assurance are five essential principles. Every assessment decision made within NQual frameworks must be:
Valid: Measures the knowledge, skills, or competence it is designed to assess.
Authentic: Demonstrates the learner's own work and achievement.
Reliable: Consistent across assessors and centres.
Current: Reflects relevant and up-to-date knowledge, skills, and industry practice.
Sufficient: Provides enough evidence to support achievement.
These criteria ensure that learner outcomes are meaningful, credible, and recognised by employers and regulators.
How Our Centres Are Approved and Why It Matters

Quality assurance begins before delivery even starts.
Before approving a centre, NQual conducts a comprehensive review to ensure it has the resources, expertise, and systems required to deliver high-quality training and assessment. This includes checks on staff qualifications and competency, Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) procedures, policies for compliance and learner protection, financial stability and organisational reliability.
New centres also complete a pre-approval visit, allowing NQual to review processes and provide guidance before delivery begins. This ensures that quality is integral from day one.
What Happens During an EQA Visit with NQual?
External Quality Assurance (EQA) visits are essential for maintaining and enhancing standards at approved centres. An initial monitoring visit, usually conducted remotely, takes place within six months of approval, followed by regular annual reviews. These visits aim not only to ensure compliance but also to assist centres in implementing best practices.
Typical EQA activities include:
Sampling learner work.
Observing assessments and marking.
Interviewing staff.
Reviewing quality assurance processes.
Conducting feedback meetings.
Centres are given advance notice to allow time for preparation.
After each monitoring, detailed feedback is provided, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement.
How NQual Quality Assures Every Learner
Quality assurance extends beyond centre-level monitoring and applies to every learner undertaking an NQual qualification. NQual uses two main types of sampling:
Formative sampling: Carried out during the learner’s programme to monitor progress and support improvement.
Summative sampling: Completed at the end of the programme to confirm final assessment decisions.
Sampling ensures that assessment decisions are consistent, fair, and aligned with national standards.
NQual Explains: Risk-Based Monitoring (RAG Ratings)

Experience, performance, and risk profile vary across centres. NQual uses a risk-based approach to quality assurance.
Centres are assigned a RAG rating:
Red: Higher risk, requiring increased monitoring and sampling.
Amber: Moderate risk, requiring regular oversight.
Green: Low risk, with stable and consistent performance.
This approach allows us to target support where it is needed most, maintain high standards across all centres, and adapt monitoring based on performance and experience. Higher-risk centres may receive more frequent visits or increased sampling until improvements are demonstrated.
NQual’s Continuous Monitoring and Improvement
Quality assurance at NQual is an ongoing process rather than a one-time event.
Centre performance is regularly monitored based on:
Learner outcomes and completion rates.
Assessment methods and volume.
Assessor experience and capability.
Strength of internal quality assurance processes.
Where risks or concerns are identified, additional quality assurance activities may be introduced to safeguard assessment quality and learner outcomes.
Supporting Our Centres Through Feedback and Training

A key part of our approach is supporting centres to continuously improve.
Following EQA activities, centres receive detailed feedback reports, SMART action points where required, and guidance on improving delivery and assessment. In addition, centres benefit from access to EQA support sessions, ongoing communication with a dedicated EQA, and standardisation webinars and training opportunities. This ensures that quality assurance is collaborative, not just compliance-driven.
Ensuring Compliance and Protecting Standards with NQual
Maintaining the integrity of qualifications is essential. NQual requires centres to follow strict policies relating to:
Malpractice and maladministration.
Appeals and complaints.
Data protection and compliance.
Any concerns are taken seriously and investigated in line with regulatory requirements.
Regular standardisation and CPD activities also ensure that all staff remain competent and up to date.
Why Quality Assurance Matters
Effective quality assurance creates value for learners, centres, employers, and regulators by ensuring qualifications remain credible, consistent, and fit for purpose.
Effective quality assurance benefits everyone:
Learners gain qualifications that are trusted and recognised.
Centres receive support to deliver high-quality programmes.
Employers can rely on the skills and knowledge being assessed.
At NQual, our approach, from centre approval to certification, ensures that every qualification meets the highest standards.
