How to Ensure Success on Early Years Educator Level 3 Apprenticeship

Updated: Feb 20

The End-Point Assessment (EPA) is the final stage of your Early Years Educator Level 3 apprenticeship, and you must pass it to achieve your qualification. EPA is your opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) and show exactly how you work in practice. This guide breaks down the EPA for Versions 1.1-1.5 of the Early Years Educator Standard (ST0135) into clear, simple steps to help you feel confident, prepared, and ready to succeed.

What’s Included in the Early Years Educator Level 3 EPA?

Your EPA includes two assessment methods:

  1. Observation with Questioning

  2. Professional Discussion underpinned by your Portfolio of Evidence.

Each method is designed to allow you to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours set out in the assessment plan, enabling you to achieve your Level 3 apprenticeship.

By clicking the button below, you will be directed to the official assessment webpage, where you can find EPA Resources and the Assessment Gateway.

How to Prepare for My Observation with Questioning on the Early Years Educator Apprenticeship Standard

A teacher and two kids playing with colourful toy food in a classroom. The setting is bright and cheerful, with a playful mood.

Duration:

  • 50 minutes: Observation

  • 30 minutes: Questioning

During the observation, the assessor watches you complete real tasks in your usual work environment. They won’t take part or interrupt you; they’re simply observing you doing your job. The questioning takes place afterwards in a quiet, distraction-free space. If you need a question repeated or rephrased, simply ask.

Top Tips for a Successful Observation

  1. Practise with a colleague.

Have someone “observe” you carrying out everyday tasks, so you get used to being watched.

  2. Prepare your teaching pack.

This will provide context for your assessor.

  3. Show confidence in your practice

If appropriate, explain what you’re doing and why. Demonstrate your understanding clearly.

  4. Use best practice, not shortcuts

Complete tasks in line with training, policies and the Early Years standards.

  5. Do mock assessments

Use the mock resources from NQual to familiarise yourself with real assessment conditions.

  6. Know your assessment criteria

Review your Support Pack so you understand exactly what the assessor needs to see: Early Years Educator Level 3 (V1.5) - Apprentice EPA Support Pack

  7. Bring your additional notes

You may bring one side of A4 handwritten bullet points (not a script).

How to Prepare for My Professional Discussion (PD) on the Early Years Educator Apprenticeship Standard

Duration:

  • 90 minutes

  • Minimum of 10 questions, plus follow‑up questions

Your professional discussion is a structured, two-way conversation with your assessor. They will ask questions based on your role, experience and Portfolio. This is your chance to reflect, explain and showcase your development.

Top Tips for a Confident Professional Discussion

  1. Practise mock discussions

Use mock questions from your training provider or employer to get used to answering under timed conditions.

  2. Use your Portfolio of Evidence

Refer to real examples to support your answers and show how you meet the KSBs.

  3. Use a clear structure

Try: “In this situation… I did… and the result was…” This keeps your answers focused and professional.

  4. Know your terminology

Review your assessment plan so you understand the key terms used during the EPA.

  5. Understand command verbs

Words like 'explain', 'evaluate' and 'discuss' tell you the type of answer required. Use the NQual Command Verbs Guide to build confidence.

  6. Stay calm and professional

The assessor is there to support your success. Ask for clarification if needed.

  7. Bring your additional notes

Again, you may bring one side of A4 handwritten bullet points (not a script).

How to Use My Portfolio of Evidence Effectively during my EPA for Early Years Educator – Level 3 Apprenticeship

Using your Portfolio of Evidence during the assessment is a great way to refresh your memory, especially when you’re feeling the pressure. It’s completely natural for things to slip your mind in those moments. Your Portfolio supports the examples you give in your professional discussion, so being familiar with it can make a huge difference to your confidence and the clarity of your answers.

Top Tips for Using Your Portfolio with Confidence

  1. Know it inside out

Be familiar with the layout so you can find evidence quickly.

  2. Use the NQual submission document

This helps track your evidence and supports the assessor in locating what you reference.

  3. Do not change anything

You must use the exact version submitted at Gateway.

  4. Choose digital or printed

    You may choose either format.

    • Digital: You’ll simply share your screen with your assessor so they can see what you are referencing.

    • Paper: The assessor will have a copy sent to them before the exam. They will ask to view the paper version before the assessment begins to ensure no additional notes have been added.

  5. Limit videos and audio

Transcripts or highlighted sections are quicker and easier to reference.

  6. Bring your additional notes

Again, you may bring one side of A4 handwritten bullet points (not a script).
